What are neck straps and why do I need one? Proper breast collar fit is essential for barrel horses. A poor fitting breast collar can actually make it uncomfortable for a horse to stride out, costing you valueable time. And cinching a breast collar up as tight as it will go does not always cure a poor fit. Searching to find a breast collar that fits properly is not always an option either. The fit of a breast collar depends on the build of your horse's shoulders, the height of the dees on your saddle, etc. An easy way to fix a poorly fitting breast collar is to use a neck or wither strap. This strap connects to the dees on the breast collar and lays over the withers of the horse, holding the collar above the point of the horse's shoulders, freeing up the shoulders to move. The strap corrects the fit of the breast collar, while not sacrificing the ability of the collar to help hold the saddle in place.
